New and Improved

If performance, portability, and battery life is what you’re looking for in a gaming laptop, check out the Gibabyte Aero 15X. It’s 6-core Intel processor and gaming display, lightweight portability, and cleaver design are sure to be a win for all gamers.

Hands on Review

This Engaget Review on the lays out everything. Brushed black aluminum chassis, amazingly solid keyboard, a host of high speed ports, and top of the line performance with the 6-core i7-8750H CPU and NVIDIA GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics. At just 18mm (0.7 inches) thick, it is about as thin as any other lightweight gaming laptop out there. It’s 4.5 pounds does mean it’s just a bit heavier than MSI’s GS63VR 7RG 4.2 pound gaming laptop, but not quite a heavy at ASUS’s ROG Zephyrus GX501.

Performance wise, the Aero 15X tops out the charts by showing a CPUMark score of 12,500. Even though the machine packs a GTX 1070 card, it’s performance is more like the GTX 1060 chip. Game such as Witcher 3, Wolfenstein II and Rise of the Tomb Raider handle well at 1t 1080p, hitting 120 fps (on Rise of the Tomb Raider). On a 4K monitor, the frame rate on Witcher 3 was well over 30 fps, which is more than acceptable for such a small laptop. Video editing really shines on this beast. Mixing HD and 4K video is snappy and responsive with resource-hungry video, doing full HD encoding in just over 7 minutes.

Battery life comes in at a whopping 7 hours, 40 minutes; about twice as long as the latest GS63VR 7RG Stealth Pro. Such a long battery life is mostly due to the huge 94.24 Wh battery as well as the fact that it sends video playback processing functions to the integrated Intel UHD 630 graphics.

Specs

  • Display: 15.6″ IPS Full HD (1920 x 1080) 144Hz Wide Viewing Angle Anti-Glare Display | Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 (Max-Q)
  • Processor: 8th Gen Intel Coffee Lake Core i7-8750H Six Core (2.2GHz-4.1GHz, 9MB Intel Smart Cache, 45W)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz | Hard Drive: 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64 Bit) | Warranty: 2-Year Gigabyte USA + Global Warranty Parts & Labor + Lifetime Tech Support from EXcaliberPC

Review Summary

The Gibabyte Aero 15X has 24 reviews on Amazon with a 4 star overall rating. Here’s a few recent reviews:

  • The Gigabyte Aero 15x is a great gaming laptop for the price. It’ll play any AAA game that you throw at it at max graphics without too much of an issue. The M.2 SSD is also wonderful and super fast. On the Pros, the laptop is definitely well built and the screen is absolutely gorgeous. Gaming on this is a breeze, well above 60 fps at ultra settings. Cons, there is a known issue with the USB ports acting up, especially when you plug in an external USB hub, the laptop gets really hot and the fans are noisy when running at full speed.
  • I find this machine it easy to look at, solid, and very powerful. The main use for this machine is going to be as for graphical design, photo and video editing. I will also play video games games with it. In the last month that I’ve had it, I haven’t had any issue with it except for a audio driver problem which was easily fixed.
  • Great laptop all around. I was in the market for a new laptop that I could use in college. Something that had the horsepower to both play games, but the portability and battery to be used as a workstation as well. Gigabyte did a great job combining the best of both worlds into this beautiful chassis.

Designed for Real World Power

Looking for both a laptop and tablet for your on the go designing work? Then, look no further than the Dell Inspiron 13 5000. It’s not just the 8th Gen i5 processors, the 8GB of DDR4 RAM, on the 256GB SSD drive that make it fabulous. It’s also the 360-degree hinge, long battery life, and large screen resolution that make it awesome.

This review in PC World gives the Inspiron a solid 4 star review for having brisk performance at a reasonable price. Weighing in at about 3.5 pounds, the 13.3-Inch screen feels a bit heavy but it does have a screen that fully swivels into sandwich mode. The 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor is a Quadcore beast that breezes through tasks that dual core systems struggle to finish. Battery life is about 5.5 hours, depending on how hard you push it.

Specs

  • 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.4 GHz)
  • 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 up to [16GB], (additional memory sold separately)

Review Summary

The Dell Inspiron 13 5000 has a four star review on Amazon with 20 total customer reviews. Here’s a summary of the most helpful reviews:

  • The build quality is nice. Despite being a plastic shell it feels of good quality to the point of questioning if it is plastic. The finish is nice and doesn’t appear to attract finger prints as much as glossier finishes. Its a good balance of enough weight to not feel cheap but not too much that its “heavy” for its size. The hinge between the base and monitor is sturdy and feels like it should last if treated well. I dont notice any wobbling while typing on a hard flat surface. The keyboard is ok but not great. For the price I was unable to find a laptop with everything I was looking to compete with this. I wanted a 13″ or smaller 1080 touchscreen with an 8th gen CPU, 250GB+ SSD, 8GB+ DDR4 RAM. Battery life appears to land me at about 6+ hours of steady use so I am very happy with it. This was the best deal I could find at the time including that ($709).
  • I’m surprised. I’ll be honest in saying I’m pleasantly surprised. I didn’t expect to love this laptop as much as I did. After my tablet finally died I wanted something more versatile, and was thinking detachable keyboards would be the way to go. Saw this for the right price and decided to give it a shot. I’ll never buy a 2-in-1 that can’t swivel, ever. Can rotate it to any angle, adapts right away to tablet mode. It’s a solid little powerhouse that can get a bit hot, but that’s expected. Low storage isn’t a huge issue. You can keep most things on another homegroup computer and keep the essentials local. Overall, great laptop for the price.
  • Great Specs & Touch. This is one great laptop. Amazing tech stuff, memory and all. No doubt about it. The touchscreen is pretty good and I can’t see how it could be better. The resolution is perfect (especially for a 13″ screen). I know some will complain about how the screen could fit more the size and stuff like that, but this is a 2in1 laptop. You’re supposed to have somewhere to hold if you’re in tablet mode. Keep that in mind. I think the only thing that could be better is the touchpad. After a few changes in windows options, I managed to find a pretty good balance, but it’s not yet perfect.
  • Very Flexible. I have been using this laptop for the past few weeks and have nothing but great things to say about it! The laptop is very thin and lightweight. Very sleek looking and easy to throw in a carry all bag or computer sleeve and run out the door. The battery life has been good. It has been disconnected for about 4-5 hours, laptop was connected to wireless internet and Microsoft running and still the laptop had battery to give before it was plugged back in. Some of the features that took some time to get a hang of, but I ended up loving, were the touchpad and the touchscreen. The touchpad is very sensitive. While typing if you hover close enough to the touch pad it will move the mouse and change your screen. For having a laptop that is for personal use, mostly email, online, and Microsoft office this laptop is perfect. It is fast, lightweight and easy to use.

The Hour of Power

Digging deeper into the Gaming Laptops world reveals the MSI GS43VR Phantom Pro-069 Ultra Portable Gaming Laptop. It’s not just a gaming laptop or ultra portable laptop, it’s both! It comes in both 14.3 Inch and 15.6 sizes and packs a punch with the Intel Core i7-7700HQ (7th gen Intel) and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 gaming card. Battery life is about 4 hours when doing intense gaming. It’s got 41 customer reviews on Aazon with a 4 star rating and 108 answered questions.

This review on Notebook check indicates that this second generation GS63VR is much more improved with more power efficient Kaby Lake and Pascal options and is now much more thin. The 4K UHD panel is a mixed bag due in part to its RGBW pixel array. Raw performance from the i7-7700HQ is only marginally better than the previous Skylake i7-6700HQ in multi-threaded workloads. This beast struggles to run most games at the native 4K UHD resolution with many titles averaging below 30 FPS but…if you trun down the settings to the low-medium range shframe rates are between the 30 and 60 FPS range. Most titles will otherwise run at 60 FPS or higher when gaming at 1080p with all settings set to High or Maximum.

Specs

Full details include:

  • 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad-Core
  • 32GB of DDR4 RAM | 512GB SSD + 1TB HDD
  • 15.6″ 1920 x 1080 eDP IPS Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB GDDR5)

  • The BEST laptop I’ve ever owned: I’ve been in the market for a portable workstation that could also be used for school and for some gaming. It was a race between this laptop, Razer Blade 14’’, Auros X3, GS63VR 7RE,Gigabyte 14’, and Asus GL502. All of them had at LEAST a 6700HQ/7700HQ and GTX 1060. Obviously, this laptop won. The big things that swayed me in this direction were weight (3.75lbs), price ($1500 with the 7th gen i7), Thunderbolt 3.0, and form factor (including cooling and noise level). The GS43VR is slightly larger than the Blade, but is lighter and has better cooling which leads to being quieter. The Auros has about the same specs but costs WAYYY more. The GS63VR 7RE is has the same specs as the GS43 but is larger, weighs more but has better cooling. The Gigabyte was larger, heavier, costs more. The Asus costs the same, has a 120HZ GSync screen, better cooling, BUT NO THUNDERBOLT! This machine has it all, and then some
  • Better than the 4K Version: I have had this laptop for about a week and it has been working really well for me. Originally i spent about $900 on a laptop without a graphics card and it couldn’t play any games whatsoever. Should have expected that. So when looking for a replacement i wanted something slim, plenty of space, a graphics card, and a nice overall design. This has all of that. Originally I looked at the 4k version of this laptop but i decided against it because unfortunately a 1060 laptop GPU will NOT play games at 4k very well. Just not going to happen. So instead I opted for the 1920×1080 screen and a higher SSD+RAM combo. My other reason for not going 4k was that it doesn’t always scale well and especially on smaller screens. while 15 inch laptops aren’t small perhaps, they aren’t 27-inch screens either.
  • Great Laptop: I’ve had the GS43VR for about a month and it’s one of the best gaming laptops I’ve had. It doesn’t have the top of the line gtx 1080 in it but it does kick out some power. This laptop was made for gamers who want portability. The 14 inch screen is the perfect size and the gtx 1060 is more than enough to play new games in medium to high quality. I really like that it has a thunderbolt 3 port too. I have the razer core and it works perfectly with this laptop. Just update your drivers, download razer synapse and you’re good to go. Works with the evga 1080ti! Its exceeded my expectations so far.

  • Top Notch Performance: You are getting a $,1049 laptop with the kaby lake i7, gtx1060, 16gb ram that is easy to upgrade, a 256 SSD, IPS screen. Is this entry level yes? Should you expect small details that aren’t on this model to drop the price? YES! But the things that were dropped from the G9-593-72VT are not performance changing items.
This rig easily handles new games from high to ultra settings killing it in FPS. I play Arma 3 which is extremely CPU intensive and horribly optimized. With some graphics tweaks I was still pushing 50 fps on high.
  • Compatible with Oculus Rift: Laptop works great for Virtual Reality with the latest Oculus Rift CV1 and $399 touch bundle. Here’s a tip for those worried about not enough usb 3.0 ports on the laptop for oculus users : To have the best oculus performance which requires 3 qty usb 3.0 ports, use the laptop’s left side usb (3.0) for the oculus headset and then buy this: “AmazonBasics USB 3.1 Type-C to 4 Port USB Hub”. This will allow you to convert the laptop’s left side usb c (3.1) port to usb 3.0 ports power the rift’s 2 usb sensors at usb 3.0 bandwidth speeds.
  • Awesome Gaming Laptop: When I saw the reviews for the Acer Predator Helios 300 with a 1060 card and 256 GB SSD. I was a little bit worried about the quality of the laptop based on some of the reviews here, but I can tell you almost everything about this computer is awesome. I’ve been playing games over the past two days, and it works flawlessly. No problems with the hardware or software. As soon as I started up the computer and went through the basic set up, I went to the Acer website and updated the BIOs and the Nvidia drivers. No problem whatsoever. I did order the Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD – I will install it in the extra drive port (or whatever you call it!).

  • Best Laptop Value: I am a research nerd. I used to spend in excess of 50 million a year for the largest retailer of its kind in my industry, I am obsessive when comparing details and am even more obsessed with getting every last ounce of value for my money. This is a fantastic laptop for the majority of people, I do not intend to do heavy gaming or run heavy/complex programs. I spent about 20 working hours comparing over 400 laptops (nerd) from all major brands, and looked at over 300 deals(super nerd) offered on laptops by all major retailers on both black friday and cyber monday. I chose this laptop for $329 on cyber monday, and although it was only $20 off, versus others that were $200 or more off, this was still the most computer for the money.
  • Incredible Deal and Easy to Upgrade: This model (1TB HD, 4GB RAM) is the best buy in low budget laptops for many reasons. I was prepared to return it but it’s exceeded my expectations. First, it has features almost never found in even sub $800 unit much less $329 – backlight keyboard, 1920 x 1080 display and upgradable/replaceable storage. For those reasons alone, it’s a 5 star machine.
  • Great if you Know What You’re Doing: This system is excellent for those who just need a reasonable system without having to pay an arm and a leg for it. Although, it can be kind of slow. Be aware this is NOT a super duper gaming laptop. If it was it would have a dedicated video card and an i5 at least. SIt’s even better for advanced users such as myself. Why? Because us advanced users like to upgrade the system. Unlike prior versions of Acer Aspire laptops where you have to take the entire bottom cover off, safely and slowly disconnect a dozen cables, and then remove a bunch of random parts just so you can get to replacing the RAM or hard drive, this system allows you to easily unscrew 3 screws and pop out the bottom to replace the hard drive for a faster 7200 RPM one, add an M.2 SSD, or upgrade the RAM.

ASUS-G73SW-A1-SaleCareful if you’re a gamer–when you receive this laptop, remember it’s not waterproof. Be sure not to slobber while you’re ogling it! Beginning at the most fundamental part of gaming is the enormous 17.3″ Full HD (1920×1080) LED Display screen where all the action happens. Of course, that’s no good if there’s no badass video card in the picture. The Nvidia GTX 460M Graphics with 1.5GB GDDR5 RAM has beautiful reviews, with one review saying “90FPS ultra settings in World of Warcraft(Cataclysm).” That is ridiculously fast enough to satisfy all but the most expectant gamer (remember, this is just a laptop).

Of course, a good game stores as much of itself as it can in your RAM memory. How much does this beast have to offer? Well, even Crysis 2 hardware requirements are far below the 8GB this ASUS brings to the table. Boost it to 16GB if you like, there’s room for that too! Plus, this comptuer comes with a longer warranty than most companies these days, with its 2-year replacement warranty. There’s also an unheard-of 1-year Accidental Damage warranty, covering nearly anything that happens even if it’s clearly your fault! Maybe drooling on the keyboard will even be covered!

Of course, what’s the brains in the ASUS G73SW-A1? All I’ve mentioned so far is great, yes, but if there’s an old fuddy-duddy 486 processor running this whole circus, then that would be a real problem. This Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz Quad-Core with Turbo Boost up to 2.8GHz) Central Processor Unit is fantastically powerful, yet, looking at this computer’s price point, is surprising that it’s available for such a price. This CPU ranks very high up the High-end CPU performance tests. So have no fear, this CPU can keep up with you for sure.

Well, all the data you’re gaming with comes from one place: the hard drive. Normally, that’s a very slow part of the computer that bogs things down. Not with an SSD hybrid drive, where solid-state memory is used to hold the information the computer is currently processing! It works much like RAM, but has a much larger storage space, plus its solid-state nature performs much faster than a traditional hard drive. What’s more, this is backed by two–count ‘em–500GB hard drives running at the high speed of 7200 RPM.

As you can see, no one skimped on this computer design and no shortcuts were taken. And as was said, this is no gamble, so put your dice away. It’s all winning with the ASUS G73SW-A1 with a $335 Discount here.

This is the laptop with the most bang for your hard earned bucks. Intel i7 quad core processor with speeds up to 2.9 G Hz and 4GB ram will power any first person shooter or MMO. NVidea powered graphics with 1G of dedicated ram will give you quality high definition when your playing Black-ops or watching Avatar on the Blue-ray Multidrive. This is seriously one of the best screens avail on a system that is less then $1500.  18.4″ trubrite with 1680 x 945 resolution, built-in webcam, and mic will let you video chat with your buddies while you playing or working on projects in another window. With all of the software included in this system, your old desktop is going to be collecting dust.  Windows 7pro is capable of running your 64bit programs, and with Windows Media Center you can easily watch or listen all of your favorite media files from your Xbox, desktop, or while your on the go.

The customer reviews of this system are stellar. Anyone that wants a laptop for less then $1500 and performance that will keep up with the rapid growth of digital media and 64bit performance will have to look at this system. I honestly had a hard time finding negative comments on this system, the vast majority of customers had no problems with windows 7 file and settings transfer, or anything else.

Here are some customers comments on what they liked about the X500:

  • Ease of installation, software package is free of junk and promotions
  • Graphic quality are intense and true HD
  • Audio is crystal clear and built-in speakers are great for movies and games
  • Blue-ray drive and fans are quiet and they don’t take away from media experience
  • Webcam has good picture quality and great software support
  • Great overall system with everything you need for work, school, or entertainment at an even better price then most systems with all of these features

And here are a few negative points from customers of the x500:

  • the 18.4″ screen really burns through the battery when your not plugged in;  you do need to turn down the brightness and enable energy-saver modes
  • due to the large screen and battery, this system weighs more then systems that perform this well
  • some customers did not like the red trim and lack of customization to the appearance of the laptop

When your updating your software for the first time be sure to choose either windows internet security, the free-trail software included, or whatever software you prefer. Installing multiple spyware and virus monitoring systems will not make your system more safe, and will probably cause some problems when setting up networks, and some hosting issues. There are less expensive laptops out there that will let you experience HD gaming and video, but if your looking to master games like World of Warcraft and raise your rankings in Call of  Duty Black-ops then you need this system to take you to the next level. Processor speed, memory utilization, and software support all come together in this machine, and its sure to be a top-rated customer pick for a long time to come.

LG is about to release the world’s thinnest laptop, the new Xnote P210. The 12.5-inch LCD will actually fit inside the footprint of an 11.6-inch LCD–it’s that thin. This machine has a dual-core Core i5-470UM processor inside (capable of running between 1.33GHz and 1.86GHz), 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB HDD. LG calls its display “HD” but we still don’t know the exact details since it comes out next month…in Korea. It will probably come with Windows 7 and 720p HD resolution, with a price tag at around $1,135. Maybe someday something like this will land in the States.

Here’s a promo video for the LG Xnote P210. LG is releasing this dual-core Core i5-470UM system (4GB of RAM, and a 320GB HDD) in Korea in February. Why do the coolest tech always originate from Japan, Korea, or China? Someday, I’d love to see tech like this show up right here in the States, first!
